Reflections on the Scriptures by Jason Arsenault

Perfectly Sheltered Ones

“They have taken crafty counsel against Your people, and consulted together against Your sheltered ones.”
—Psalm 83:3

Some consider being sheltered a negative thing, and it can be, in certain cases. Over-sheltering certainly can lead to a dangerous naivety. We are called to live in this world, eyes and hearts open, not ignorant to the devil and his devices. We cannot expect to walk in this world without being impacted by the sin that so easily besets us.

At the same time, we must heed the command to be separate, to live differently, to be innocent to what is evil, and wise to what is good. To live what some will consider to be a sheltered life. To live in this world and yet not conformed to it.

What an amazing privilege it is then to be sheltered perfectly by the Lord!

For You have been a shelter for me, a strong tower from the enemy. I will abide in Your tabernacle forever; I will trust in the shelter of Your wings. Selah” (Psalm 61:3-4)

He is a good Father, knowing exactly what we need and when we need it. Nothing gets through His protection except that which He allows in His wisdom for our good. Let us then trust in the shelter of His wings, in the strength of His protection, and the unwavering nature of His love.
